Testing
Beginning of Grade Reading Test- "BOG"- This test is given at the beginning of the year to all third graders by the NC Department of Public Education. This test gives an indication of a student's reading level when entering third grade and can be used to show growth when compared to the End of Grade results.
End of Grade Test- "EOG"- The End of Grade test is given by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction. It is a multiple choice test given at the end of the year which covers standards from throughout the year. Third graders take the EOG in Reading and Math.
mClass Reading Assessments- This is given to all students across North Carolina. In third grade, this reading assessment measures reading level, comprehension, and fluency (word per minute). Unlike other standardized tests, it involves reading a book one-on-one with a teacher and answering oral and written questions about the book. Students are assessed using mClass at the beginning, middle and end of year.
Read to Achieve- North Carolina General Assembly’s Read to Achieve program is part of the Excellent Public Schools Act that became law in July 2012. The goal of this law is that all students read at grade level by the end of third grade. Students who are reading below grade level during third grade may need additional support and tracking of progress in order to be proficient by the end of the year.
Cognitive Abilities Test- "CogAT"- This test is administered to all third graders in the fall. The CogAT measures a student's aptitude in verbal, quantitative, and nonverbal areas. It is used as the first part toward identification for the Academically/Intellectually Gifted Program. If a student's score meets the designated cutoff score, they will also take the Iowa Test of Basic Skills.
Iowa Test of Basic Skills- "ITBS"- The ITBS is an achievement test which shows acquired knowledge in reading and math.
